Ebay-ing for Coupons Pt 2
Ebay has really got some sellers on there lately that are taking advantage of newcomers to coupons. In my humble opinion, they are abusing the system. I come across this with a little detective work while wondering what was going on with my bids.
There are some of the sellers that, I believe, are running up the bids on their own lots. I will give you an example of why I was even curious to start:
Lot of 20 coupons for .45/1 Angel Soft bathroom tissue (AWESOME coupon)
The lot had a bid of around 1.20. I bid 2.10. This gave me the winning bid. An hour before the auction ended, My bid was maxed out but not over come. (It was one of those sellers that use the same photo for all their listings. I had bought from them previously. Keep this in mind.)
3 other lots that I had been bidding on were done the same way. Maxed out but never outbid. I went and looked at the history of the bids. Each bid had been at the .10 integral that the seller had specified for their listings. And across the listings I had purchased, it was the same bidder with identical bidding pattern. Always maxing, never topping. On Ebay, if you bid the same as someone else the bid will be matched, but the other bidder will win because they bid that amount first. It is a tell-tale sign that the auction was worked.
Unfortunately, there is nothing that can really be done about this. My advice, if you have the time, is to add items to your watch list and keep them fairly regular around the same period of time, and during times when you are going to be online anyway. Then when you are already on the computer, you can keep a tab open to watch the progress. I usually bid during the last hour and keep an eye on my lots every 15-20 minutes.
The only bad part about this type of bidding is that you are more tempted to pay WAY more than you want just so you will win. You have to be able to draw the line. If you know you are competitive by nature, you may want to just go ahead and bid your max that you are willing to pay and just let it run. Just be smart about your own tenancies and what you want. choose the way that is most beneficial to you.

Ebay-ing for Coupons
Ebay can be a very easy way to get your coupons for items that you are buying on sales, or that your family uses on a consistent basis. I personally watch for coupons that aren't in our Sunday paper. Some of my family's items would include:
sugar
lipton tea bags
cooking oil
capri sun
kool aid jammers
anything to put in my honey's lunch bucket
toilet paper
paper towels
and so on, and so on, and so on..... (you get the point surely)
Besides my weekly sales, I am always looking for new coupons with a expiration date that is at least 4 weeks out on items we use regularly. This is one way to keep a good healthy supply of coupons on hand in your binder for those unadvertised sales or "everyday savings" which are like a managers special. They are usually isolated to one store or in-store only deals. This is where you can really stock up and save big $$$.
Another bonus about Ebay that I like is that people post coupons that are from different regions (coupon inserts and printables are regional so values and types can vary greatly.). My stores double up to .50, so I of course check into what coupons are out there that will double at my store.
Key points to remember when shopping this way:
1. Never pay more than .05 per coupon for coupons that you are not buying for a sale.
2. Always assume that this product will not be going on sale. You never want to look at the listing and think "but if it goes on sale it would be worth it"
3. Look for lots with 10+ coupons per lot. (20 coupons is preferable, but some "hot" lots will only list in sets of 10."
4. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR SHIPPING RATES!!!! I cannot express this enough. Factor any shipping charges into your cost and see if that seller has any other coupons that you are interested in before buying. Many sellers combine shipping which will save you money in the long run.
Buying on Ebay can be a learn-as-you-go process. Sometimes you have to get burned before you learn. I will provide all the tips I can, but ultimately, your shopping is up to you. Just remember that you control you and your purse strings.

Shopping Strategies for April 22-28
This weekend there are a couple of items that I really want to grab. To those who do not shop and stock pile, my numbers would seem totally ridiculous without a proper explanation. So I will be sure to explain after I have posted my shopping list and budget so you can better understand why.
Let's get the shock over with....
This week there aren't a whole lot of sales, but there were 2 of them that I cannot afford to pass up on: Kroger's Stouffer's Entrees and Foodland's Angel Soft tissue. These are used regularly in my home (as well as in several of your own) and at the time, I am running low (I got 2 - 4pks of Angel Soft and 3 Stouffer's entrees in my freezer).
The Stouffer's has not been on sale like this with coupons of this high of value in the past 6 months that I know of. The Angel Soft was not on sale at all when the last batch of coupons were out last fall, and when the sales did hit a month or so ago, there weren't coupons this good out then. So I did not stock up. This is my weekend.
My shopping list:

My planned purchase.... 15@ $3 = $45
***Retails at a Wal-Mart price of 6.48. The large ones are around $11.00. Even if you buy 2 of the smaller "sale" size to equal the size of the large, you come out cheaper using coupons because you can use 2 coupons on the 2 smaller ones.

***I am stocking up so many because I have 3 women in my home and I am not stingy in the least with my goods. You can ask anyone who knows me. I share my good fortune with those who need it. Since my coupons are good until 5/14 I am going to hold on to most of them until the last week in case Foodland puts their Clorox back on sale for $1.69 a gallon. $.29 may not seem like much to be saving, but when you buy in bulk, you can save a LOT of money. For example, I have 15 coupons currently. 30 gallons @ 1.68 - $2/2 coupons = 20.40 ... 30 gallons @ $1.98 - $2/2 coupons = $29.40.That .29 just turned into just under $9. Now, what could $9 buy your family to eat tonight?

***High Value coupons that expire 5/12. I plan on holding the biggest part for a possible sale later on these products.
Yes there are only 5 items on my store list for this week. I will spend around $80 (after tax) at the store, and bring home around $220 worth of products for my family to use. Consider this though, when I am at Towne-N-Country Foodland I can also look at next week's deals before the sales papers are even out.
Most of the time I also shop next week's deals and make notes of the ones that I want more of. This allows me precious time to get any coupons that I don't already have, plus to compare them against the preview for coupons that will probably be in our Sunday paper.
Another trick I have in my arsenal is the meat department. They have meats there in a section that actually have coupons for between $1-$4 off. Plus, their pick 5 for $19.99 is awesome. You can get boneless skinless chicken breasts, pork chops, chicken tenders/nuggets, seasoned breasts/wings/leg quarters, and sometimes (if you're really lucky) you can find good looking steaks.
This is another area where I save money by buying and freezing my meats. If you are worried about freezer burn, wrap your packages in Saran Wrap when you get them home. The smaller packages you can put directly down in a freezer bag for added protection, then just rinse the bag and reuse when you use the meat.
I sincerely hope you have learned how my brain works with shopping. Although scary at times, I hope you enjoyed the tour. Please keep all hands and feet inside until the ride comes to a complete stop.... Thank You for coming.... (LOL)

Probably the most controversial topic I will cover....
Let's face it ... the economy is terrible. Many people out there have lost their jobs, or can't get one for one reason or another. Many people are having to sign up for public assistance just to feed their children and families.
I wanted to touch on this subject because many people out there don't know that even if you do have to use EBT (food stamps) funds to purchase your groceries, you most definitely CAN use coupons to do so. I am positive of this fact because I worked for a local Foodland PLUS, if you know me, you know I ask around at every store I go to to ensure that I have all my facts straight before I post anything. Last thing I would want is for someone to be embarrassed at the checkout because I told them something that turned out not to be true.
There is a catch though, and I hate this one, but we can still work with it. You DO still have to pay cash tax on your coupon amount.
I know that anyone who reads this is thinking "then what is the point? If I don't use coupons, I won't have to have cash and that will save me money."
Have you thought of it this way though.... If you use coupons to save $50 on your groceries, that is $50 MORE you will have left to use on MORE groceries. For that $50, you will have to pay a whole $3.50 (estimated... not to the penny... plucking this from my head using a 7% tax rate estimate).
Now.... by using the coupons, you had to spend $3.50 in cash, so you actually get to buy another $46.50 in groceries. If you are on assistance, buzz me on our Facebook page. I will be happy to dive into this further. I would even share my coupons with you.

Foodland Catalina Deal this week!!!
This shopper LOVES when we can use coupons, save money, plus get even more coupons that, when used smartly, can add up to even greater savings! Those WONDERFUL $5 Catalinas are back this week at Foodland! (I'm just a little excited.... can you tell? lol)
So here is the scenario...
When you purchase $20 (after manufacturer coupon savings and pre-tax) you get a $5 Catalina coupon to be used on later transactions. Now... here is the good part... you can use these coupons on ANY merchandise of your choice! YEP!!!! Towne-N-Country, located in Chapmanville for those who live elsewhere, have a selection of meats in their coolers that have coupons on them.
Now don't get me wrong... these are usually the meats that have been there for a day or two. I have bought these several times from the store, and I find that if you use your brain and eyes, pick you out what looks good, take it home, and freeze it that day, you can save a TON of money. I have yet to buy meat from there that wasn't good or that went bad the day I took it home or the next, but personally, I think you should always keep your meats frozen until you use them. That way you don't "accidentally" leave them on the shelf in your fridge and they go bad because you decided that you were in the mood for something else and forgot about it..... (yep, very guilty of that one I am....)
They also have a 5 for $20 selection that can truly cut costs. I have bought ribs, pork chops, boneless skinless chicken breasts, and seasoned breasts and as long as I got the packages that were the heaviest, I come out way ahead. Take a calculator and compare the prices with the in-case meats. That is the smartest way to do it if you aren't so handy with numbers in your head. Compare your in-house per-pound rate with the rate of the package you are considering purchasing.
Now that you have your meats, you take them to check out (this can be in the same shopping trip or later by the way) and you use your nifty catalina to get even deeper discounts on your purchase! Free MEAT PEOPLE! You never get coupons on that!
This week, the catalina is on General Mills products. Here is smart shopping...
I buy the Helpers all the time anyway... so why not go ahead and buy them, with coupons of course, get them at one time and with other items, get my catalina? So... I use 5 of my $1/3 coupons, get 15 boxes of different chicken and hamburger helpers (enough to feed my crew about 8 times because we have to use 2 boxes each time. This should last me around a month.), spend the .67 cent on them each instead of the $1 sale price, get all for $10.05 pre-tax, and I am already half way to getting my catalina!
BUT.... here is the trick....
IF you decide to go ahead and stock up enough (especially if you have a large family to feed and like to have extra just in case someone needs a little help getting by) and get enough to spend over $40, break your purchases into 2 separate transactions. The cashiers don't bat an eye when I do, and frankly, they know me well enough to know what I am up to. They are mfg coupons anyway, so the store don't loose any money on anything. So don't feel like you are in anyway hurting your favorite store. You will get 2 catalina coupons for $5..... that is $10 worth of FREE MEAT! to cook with your helper...

So here is the scenario...
When you purchase $20 (after manufacturer coupon savings and pre-tax) you get a $5 Catalina coupon to be used on later transactions. Now... here is the good part... you can use these coupons on ANY merchandise of your choice! YEP!!!! Towne-N-Country, located in Chapmanville for those who live elsewhere, have a selection of meats in their coolers that have coupons on them.
Now don't get me wrong... these are usually the meats that have been there for a day or two. I have bought these several times from the store, and I find that if you use your brain and eyes, pick you out what looks good, take it home, and freeze it that day, you can save a TON of money. I have yet to buy meat from there that wasn't good or that went bad the day I took it home or the next, but personally, I think you should always keep your meats frozen until you use them. That way you don't "accidentally" leave them on the shelf in your fridge and they go bad because you decided that you were in the mood for something else and forgot about it..... (yep, very guilty of that one I am....)
They also have a 5 for $20 selection that can truly cut costs. I have bought ribs, pork chops, boneless skinless chicken breasts, and seasoned breasts and as long as I got the packages that were the heaviest, I come out way ahead. Take a calculator and compare the prices with the in-case meats. That is the smartest way to do it if you aren't so handy with numbers in your head. Compare your in-house per-pound rate with the rate of the package you are considering purchasing.
Now that you have your meats, you take them to check out (this can be in the same shopping trip or later by the way) and you use your nifty catalina to get even deeper discounts on your purchase! Free MEAT PEOPLE! You never get coupons on that!

This week we have some decent deals I thought I would share. I am still using Ebay and Coupon Dede to purchase coupons that I need or need more of.
I also wanted to share a resource for full inserts that I have found to be quite affordable. (Plus, you don't have to worry about traveling out to get your inserts, and they mail priority through the USPS so they are usually in by Wednesday or Thursday) Check out Mad Coupons!
Here is how it works...
Inserts are sold in packs or sets of 5 and 10. The 10 pack is $15/set and the 5 pack is $8.50. This is for the whole set of coupons put in the paper, not per insert. In other words, we got 2 Smart Source, 1 GM, and 1 Red Plum in today's paper. there would be 5 copies of each of the inserts included in the 5 piece set. That is a total of 20 INSERTS!!! This is the absolute cheapest that I have found anywhere. Shipping is $5, however many of us would run that out in gas going to the store to get the papers to start with.
Now off to the store...
